Dermot Ryan was born in Clondalkin in 1924, the son of a doctor and a woman named Therese, before leaving that familiar shore for global stages. He carried the quiet discipline of Clondalkin into Rome, where he mastered ancient tongues and later received bishop's orders from Pope Paul VI. When he returned as Archbishop of Dublin, he did not abandon his youthful curiosity but expanded it, bridging churches and preserving rare books.
