Decorated stone in Youghal-Lands

Rev. Samual Hayman recorded that, in 1878, an ogham stone was found in the wall of a house (CO067-029016-) in Youghal during refurbishment work (1879b, 40). The house was to the S of the Benedictine priory of St John (CO067-029010-) and the stone, which was weathered and damaged was described as being 'of compact sand- or freestone, 3 feet 3 inches [0.98m] in height, 10.5 inches [0.26m] on the widest part of one face, and 12 inches [0.3m] on the other' (ibid.). MacAlister (1945, 82) considered that the marks on this stone were 'pseudo-Ogham' which were of 'no epigraphic importance'; in consequence it was not included in his corpus. The precise location of this stone is not known (Zajac et al. 1995, 108) and the evidence is not sufficient to warrant accepting it as belonging to the ogham stone class.
