Deal Castle rose in Dover in 1540, a stone warning that the sea belonged to no one and everyone. It watched the water for ships that came to trade or steal, turning ordinary days into guarded ones. Men may have stood at its edges with salt in their hair, listening for sails that never came or guns that answered without mercy. The castle still holds that patience, waiting for the horizon to decide whether it is friend or foe.
