This blue commemorative plaque records: The Gunter Mansion. Here in a secret Catholic chapel Jesuit priest St. David Lewis celebrated mass before his arrest and execution in 1679.
St David Lewis was a Jesuit priest who secretly conducted masses at the Gunter Mansion; he was arrested, tried for treason under the Titus Oates Plot, and executed in 1679, remembered for his clandestine ministry to Catholics during a period of severe persecution.
