Crumpaun Bridge

Three-arch hump back road bridge over river, "unfinished" 1829; extant 1838. Tuck pointed coursed or snecked rubble stone walls centred on submerged triangular cutwaters to piers to upriver (north-west) elevation having tooled cut-sandstone pyramidal capping with tooled cut-sandstone stringcourses supporting parapets having lichen-covered rounded coping. Series of three segmental arches between paired cast-iron "Pattress" tie plates with drag edged rusticated sandstone ashlar voussoirs. Sited spanning Crumpaun River with unkempt banks to river.

A bridge erected to a design by Alexander Nimmo (1783-1832), Engineer to the Western District (appointed 1822; replaced 1831), representing an integral component of the early nineteenth-century civil engineering heritage of County Mayo with the architectural value of the composition confirmed not only by the "sparrow pecked" ruby-coloured sandstone dressings demonstrating good quality workmanship, but also by the elegant "sweep" of the arches making a pleasing visual statement at a crossing over the Crumpaun River: meanwhile, a discreet benchmark remains of additional interest for the connections with cartography and the preparation of maps by the Ordnance Survey (established 1824).
