What is recorded here

In County Kerry, a red sandstone Tau cross stands beside grave 393, its angular arms marking death before ordinary Christian symbols became common. The stone may have been carved for one person, reused for another, or simply taken from an older building when the graveyard needed a boundary. Whoever placed it understood that crossing lines could separate the living from the remembered dead.

In 2011 a graveyard survey carried out by Ann Frykler and Robert Hanbidge of Headland Archaeology Ltd. recorded the following details about a possible Tau Cross (Miscellaneous No. 04): ‘Possible Tau Cross carved from old red sandstone, also forming gravemarker to Grave No. 393’ (Hanbidge 2011, 12).
