It is one of seven cross-slabs removed from Carrowntemple graveyard into the care of Sligo County Council, now held at Sligo museum. The group came from Carrowntemple graveyard, and this slab is recorded as slab 9 in the Wallace and Timoney 1987 account.

Dateable to the early medieval period, likely 8th to 10th century AD, the cross-slab would have originally served a Christian funerary or commemorative function, reflecting the spread of Christianity in the region.
