Now number KD047 in the OPW store, Kilkenny, the irregular sandstone slab still wears a cross-of-arcs within a circle, though its broken top and cracked dexter side mark it as wounded. It stood on a small mound near Clone church, facing west, before human hands moved it into keeping. Du Noyer drew that west-facing cross in the 1860s, preserving the shape after the stone left its local sky. The slab has changed address, but its arcs still describe a complete circle.
Formerly situated on a small mound (diam. c. 3m; H 0.3m) c. 80m SE of Clone church (WX015-023001--), Co. Wexford. Currently in the OPW store, Kilkenny (Kilkenny depot stone carving number: KD047). An irregular sandstone slab (L 1.02m; Wth 0.35m; T 0.26cm) which tapers towards the base (see WX015-023012-). The broad face on one side is incised with a cross-of-arcs within a circle (diam. 0.29m). The top of the stone is damaged, with a portion missing, and some spalling extends from the top onto the upper portion of the cross. There is also a crack running roughly vertically down the dexter side of the cross face.
The cross slab was drawn by Du Noyer (1864-6, 443; Royal Irish Academy: Du Noyer Sketches VII/50) when it was located on the mound. The cross was then facing west.

Probably dating to the early Christian period (5th–10th century), this cross-slab may have originally marked a burial or ritual site, associated with the nearby Clone church. Such stones often carried Christian symbols or inscriptions, though their specific folklore or use in this location remains unrecorded.
The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
