Cross-slab (present location) in Enniscorthy

A schist stone (H c. 0.9m; max. Wth c. 0.23m; T 6cm) from the church (WX038004001-) at Begerin is now in the County Wexford Museum in Enniscorthy. It has a circular head, which is damaged. On one face is a cross in relief with a hollow triangular base, and incised lines outlining the cross-ring. The other side may have had a Maltese cross in a circle at the crux. Beneath this are two figurative panels. The upper is badly worn but has three figures. The lower has a single horseman. A ninth century date and a Cornish influence is suggested for this stone (Harbison 1988, 63-6). Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 6 June, 2012

This cross-slab is likely from the early medieval period (5th–11th century) and may have functioned as a Christian memorial or ecclesiastical marker. The presence of a cross suggests a religious significance, possibly associated with the nearby church at Begerin.
