Cross-slab in Toureen

Formerly situated at Toureen Peacaun monastery (TS075-023----) and currently unlocated. The cross-slab is listed in Waddell and Holland's (1990, 171, fig. 6.37) catalogue where it is described as being in the National Museum. However, according to Okasha and Forsyth (2001, 298) there is no record of it in the National Museum. The description is based on its depiction in the Waddell and Holland article. A small slab (H c. 0.22m; Wth c. 0.16m) which was 'part of a slab of unknown form. Incised on the illustrated face are the remains of a linear Latin cross' (Okasha and Forsyth 2001, 298). It is listed as Toureen Peacaun 41 (ibid.). The stone was uncovered during the 1944 excavation (Duignan 1944, 227). Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 19 March 2014

Date likely to the early medieval period, associated with the Christian monastic settlement at Toureen Peacaun. The cross-slab may have served a liturgical or commemorative function, reflecting the spread of Christianity in the region.
