Cross-slab in Toureen

Formerly situated at Toureen Peacaun monastery (TS075 023 ). This slab was published by FitzGerald (1904, 150 51) who included a rubbing taken in 1894. According to FitzGerald the slab was lying loose at a small circular stone enclosure (TS075 023008 ) known as 'St. Peakaun's Cell' (ibid.). It is listed by Crawford (1909, 65; 1912, 242) and Macalister (1949, no. 919, 100, pl. 46, fig. 919) and was photographed in the 1930s lying loose as part of a pilgrim’s station to the W of the church (TS075 023001 ) (Waddell and Holland 1990, plate 1). The slab had been missing, however, three fragments of the slab were uncovered, buried within the church (TS075-023001-), during an excavation by Ó Carragáin in 2007 (unpublished excavation report). These slabs are currently housed in University College Cork. It is described by Okasha and Forsyth (2001, 310 12) from the various publications and drawings as a small slab (H c. 0.17m; Wth c. 0.34m; T 0.025m) which was 'part of a slab of unknown form. Incised on the visible face was an outline equal armed cross and two lines of text. One line was to the right of the right cross arm and the other line below the cross'. Probably dates to the early medieval period, associated with the Christian monastic settlement at Toureen Peacaun. It may have served as a memorial or waymark cross, reflecting the spread of Christianity in the region.
