Cross-slab in Smarmore

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 June 2012 Revised by: Claire Breen Situated in or near the church at Smarmore (LH017-084001-) are three cross-slabs (see also LH017-084004- and LH017-084006-). This example is a small broken slab, almost square in plan, placed loosely on the church wall. It has an incised equal-armed cross contained within a double circle and having a short, widely splayed stem.
