Cross-slab in Labbamolaga Middle

Cross-slab

What is recorded here

One narrow sandstone slab carried two identical crosses, a ringed cross above a Latin cross, until gravity and greed rearranged its life. It stood near the heart of Labbamolaga graveyard, left the graveyard for the church corner when a new grave wanted room, and left both when Mallow wanted it safe. The stone did not belong to one address; it belonged to the hands that kept moving it.
Formerly located near the centre of Labbamolaga graveyard (CO010-003002-) but relocated to the SE corner of the medieval church there (CO010-003003-) to make way for a grave before 1984; it was removed to the Office of Public Works depot at Mallow in 1995. This narrow sandstone slab (H 1.08m; Wth 0.24m; T c. 0.12m), has a near-identical carving on each face: a ringed cross surmounting a Latin cross; the top of the stone is broken immediately above the ring to form a gable shape. The arms and head of the cross extend beyond the ring (int. diam. c. 0.19m) to the edge of the slab (L 0.03m). The shaft continues below the ring (L 0.12m) to where a second pair of arms extends out to the edges of the slab (L 0.09m), and then continues down towards the base of the slab (L 0.44m); on one side the shaft stops c. 0.2m short of the base but on the other side ends where the face of the stone has broken away. The angles of the crosses are curved and slightly set back; there is a slight trace of a circular boss at the centre of the Latin cross. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
