Cross-slab in Inchagoill

Cross-slab

What is recorded here

This cross-slab is built into the W end of the S wall of the nave of ‘Templenaneeve’ (GA040-013004-). According to Higgins (1987, vol. II, 343, no. 68), the sides of the slab (Wth 1.1m; H 0.89m) are partly covered by mortar and its full extent is uncertain. It bears an elaborate three-line cross with semi-circular expansional terminals and a central roundel at the junction of the arms and shaft. The roundel and terminals are decorated with a key or fret pattern. Overall the design is a bit asymmetrical. This cross-slab is almost identical to one on High Island - see GA021-026039- (Scally 2014, 309, Pl. 10.3). Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 1 February 2018
Probably dating to the early medieval period, this cross-slab may have had a Christian liturgical or commemorative function, as suggested by its placement within a church structure. Specific iconography or folklore associated with the stone is not recorded.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
