One missing L-shaped sliver of garnet mica-schist once stood outside the west wall of the High Island church, its broken edges preserving the head and upper left arm of a cross. The stone is thin enough to lift into both hands, yet heavy in memory because it marked a place where people gathered before the church took that shape. It vanished from the rubble where it was first seen, leaving behind a gap that still points toward the lost whole.
This undecorated L-shaped fragment of a cross-slab (H 0.62m; Wth 0.33m; T 0.02m) was found on rubble outside the W wall of the church (GA021-026014-) on High Island. Of garnet mica-schist, it consists of the head and upper left arm, suggesting that the cross-slab was cruciform in shape. The fragment is missing (Fisher 2014, 222, no. 55, Fig. 7.9). Probably dating to the early medieval period, this fragment may have originally formed part of a Christian cross associated with the church on High Island. Its L-shape suggests it could be part of a cross-head or terminal, though its original meaning or use remains unclear.
