Cross-slab in High Island

Higgins (1987, vol. II, no. 67) records that this cross-slab is incorporated in the ‘cashel or enclosing wall’ (GA021-026022-) around the monastic site on High Island. His description is based on a photograph. The slab bears a roughly equal-armed three-line cross with D-shaped terminals and a central roundel. The right and left terminals have key patterns but the detail in the top and bottom terminals is unclear. The central roundel has a cruciform centre with a small boss in the middle. There are faint indications of a small roundel in the upper left canton of the cross. Not precisely located. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 5 May 2016

Likely dating to the early medieval period, the cross-slab may have been part of a Christian monastic settlement or used as a marker within the monastic enclosure. Such slabs often carried religious symbols and were associated with ecclesiastical sites, reflecting the spread of Christianity in the region.
