What is recorded here
On High Island, a broken garnet mica-schist slab lies recumbent on a pseudo grave, its tapered body fractured in three places yet still holding two central roundels linked to six D-shaped terminals. The upper terminals wear faint decorative motifs while the lower ones remain bare, and the topmost angle matches the oblique edge of the stone. It is not a monument to a named king or saint, but a quiet marker of forgotten belief, its design preserved only because the grave itself deceived the eye.
In the SE end of the graveyard (GA021-026026-) on High Island. Recorded by Fisher (2014, 201-3, no. 3, Fig. 7.1), this is one three decorated garnet mica-schist cross-slabs (see also GA021-026033- and GA021-026035-) associated with a pseudo grave, Grave 2. Irregular and roughly tapered in shape (L 1.19m; Wth 0.59m; T 0.04m), it was found lying recumbent on the grave and broken in three places. A central double band in low relief encloses two central roundels, each of which is linked to three large D-shaped terminals. Decorative motifs are evident in the three upper terminals but the three lower ones do not appear to be ornamented. The uppermost terminal is angled to match the oblique edge of the slab. Date likely to the early medieval period (7th–10th centuries AD), based on the cross-slab style and use of garnet mica-schist, a material common in Pictish sculpture. These slabs may mark Christian burials and are associated with early ecclesiastical sites in the region.
