What is recorded here
In Cloone, four small stones guard the forgotten church, each bearing a carved cross. The closest to the base stands sixty-two centimetres tall with a rounded top and a tiny twelve-centimetre cross cut into its west face. That much smaller mark suggests a humble hand, perhaps marking a child or a poor saint rather than a proud lord. The stones still touch the sky, keeping the name of a place most people have already forgotten.
There are four cross-inscribed stones in the graveyard at the site of the early church and close to the cross-base. This stone (Wth of base 0.44m; H 0.62m; T 0.08m) has a rounded top and a small cross (H 0.12m; span 0.10m) with expanded terminals incised into its W face. (Herity et al. 1997, 104, 001)

This cross-inscribed stone likely dates to the early medieval period, associated with Christian worship or burial practices. Its placement in a graveyard near an early church suggests it may have marked a grave or served as a devotional object.
