What is recorded here

One chamber wall in Baile Na Buaile, County Kerry, still displays a Latin cross with expanded terminals beside date stones marked 1891 and 1892. The house has become a farm outhouse, but the cross may have come from a buried place a kilometre away or been carved when the dwelling was built. Either way, it turned an ordinary wall into a threshold where memory, faith and time still meet.

One of the facing stones of a farm outhouse, formerly a dwelling house, is inscribed with a Latin cross with expanded terminals. It may originally have come from a burial ground, though the nearest is at least 1km away. However, 2 stones in the NE gable bear the inscriptions J.F.S.4 1892 and J.F.S 2 1891 and the cross may have been carved at the same time as one of these. The above description is derived from J. Probably dating to the early medieval period, this cross-inscribed stone may have served as a Christian memorial or waymark. Its presence near a former dwelling suggests possible local religious observance or reuse from an earlier burial context.
