Inishcaltra is a tiny island off County Clare where a strange cross once stood inside St. Caimin’s church. Macalister described it in 1916 as having a central stem, hollow angles, drilled holes and small uprights supporting the arms like a wooden scaffold carved into stone. That cross has vanished, leaving only a smaller fragment and a gap in the wall where devotion used to be visible.

A fragment of a cross described by Macalister (1916-17, 161, no. 79) as bearing on one face the central stem of a cross with hollows at the angles, drilled through the stone, the arms being supported by uprights with a horizontal bar connecting them with the sides of the stem of the cross. At the margin of the stone is a rounded bead-moulding. The other face of the slab was similar but in low relief and without the horizontal bars. The fragment, noted by Macalister on the N wall of the nave of St. Caimin’s church (CL029-009011-) is now missing.
