Inishcaltra is a small island off County Clare where St. Caimin’s church still stands beside the sea. Macalister found a ten-inch stone at its south wall in 1916, shaped like a Gothic window jamb with a shallow sinking on top. Whether it supported a lost cross or merely marked the church remains uncertain. The island keeps that much smaller mystery, waiting for someone to remember what the sinking held.

A possible cross-base, described by Macalister (1916-17, 145, no. 7) as a ‘stone’ (H 0.25m [10in]) shaped something like the jamb-stone of a Gothic window, having a shallow sinking in the top end. Although Macalister noted the stone at the S wall of St. Caimin’s church (CL029-009011-) the present location is not known. Compiled by: Mary Tunney Date of upload: 29 September 2015
