Half a metre of dark schist, the cross-base lay buried in the church wall on High Island, its broken tenon still seated in the rectangular socket. The stone may have served a doorway before it became a cross, and the cross may have stood before the wall closed around it. Fisher recorded the layers in 2014, but the island keeps them tangled: a base, a joint, a room, a worship, all waiting to be remembered in the right order.

Recorded by Fisher (2014, 220-21, no. 51 and no. 52, Fig. 7.8), this cross-base (L 0.58m; Wth 0.47m; T 0.07m) of garnet mica-schist was found in the SE corner of the church enclosure (GA021-026021-) on High Island. It had been reused as a building stone within the enclosure wall. A broken tenon (H 0.1m; Wth 0.15m; T 0.2m) was found in situ in the rectangular socket on the slab. The slab was also pierced by a circular tapering hole, which may have been the upper pivot hole of a doorway and, if this is correct, it is likely that it pre-dates the socket. It is possible that this is the base of cross-slab (GA021-026068-). The base is now in the OPW depot on the island - see GA021-026071- for present location.
