Criccieth Castle stands as a ruined thirteenth-century fortress on a rocky headland above Tremadog Bay, built by Llywelyn ap Iorwerth and later extended by Llywelyn ap Gruffudd. Edward I captured it in 1283, heightening its towers before Madog ap Llywelyn and Owain Glyndŵr repeatedly assaulted it during their rebellions. The castle served frequently as a prison for high-status captives until decay and fire reduced it to the romantic ruin that J.M.W. Turner sketched in 1798.
