They stand within Aberdeenshire near Banchory Ternan, serving the castle estate through summer heat. The chambers may have kept fish, butter, or fevered bodies cool when fire raged elsewhere. Stone boxes buried in earth still remember the weight of winter and the patience of men who trusted darkness to preserve life.
