Crathes Castle Policies holds ice-houses built between 1561 and 1899, standing beside a dam and sluice in Aberdeenshire. The chambers may have stored river ice through summer, feeding kitchens and cellars at Crathes Castle while heat rolled over Banchory Ternan. Water still moves through the sluice, marking the boundary between household privilege and ordinary village life.
