Crathes Castle Policies

Clearance Cairn (period Unassigned)

What is recorded here

Crathes Castle Policies holds Post Medieval ice-houses beside Banchory Ternan, where clear air may have preserved food through long winter darkness. The castle towers above the valley, but these forgotten chambers belong to the castle's hunger and the labour that fed it. They are not display rooms or tourist traps. They are the practical edge of a grand house, the part that kept people alive when pride offered no heat.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Crathes Castle Policies as Clearance Cairn (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
