What is recorded here
Toad Island in Lisnaward is a crannog, an artificial island built among reeds and shallow water. It belongs to the Christian era, when people stacked earth and stone against the lake to keep rain, rats and invaders out. The name Toad Island sounds like a joke the land told back, but toads still climb crannog ruins everywhere because damp darkness suits them. Perhaps the island was never entirely abandoned. Perhaps it simply stopped belonging to humans and returned to the creatures who never needed permission.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as CRANNOG: TOAD ISLAND. Recorded period: E.CHRIST.. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.
The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
