Crannog is a man-made island in Lough Lug, Ballygruby, County Derry, built during the Early Christian period. People raised land from wet earth and stone to keep dry feet, store grain and pray away from floodwater. The water closed around the island like a living wall, yet the island remained stubbornly yours. That is the shape of Crannog: human will forcing a small dry world into a wet one.
