What is recorded here
Crannog is an artificial island in Lankill Lough, County Fermanagh, built by people who refused to leave the water behind. The official record dates it to the E.CHRIST. and MEDIEVAL periods, but the stones still suggest a household that lived above the lake rather than beside it. Rooms, hearths and doors would have appeared from the reeds like a small town dropped into the lough. The water kept the place hidden, yet the building work proves the residents wanted the lough to hold their life instead of taking it.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as CRANNOG in Lankill Lough. Recorded period: E.CHRIST.; MEDIEVAL. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.
