Crannog in Clontygrigny

Crannog

What is recorded here

Crannog in Clontygrigny is a small circular island in Greenville Lough, County Cavan, Ireland, marked on maps from 1836 and 1876. It sits about sixty metres from the shoreline, small enough to cross in moments yet distinct enough to resist forgetting. The water likely touched its edge at dawn and retreated by noon, giving whoever lived there a narrow margin between land and loss.
Small circular island (diam. c.20m) marked on OS 1836 and 1876 eds. In Greenville Lough, c. 60m from the shoreline. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
