Crannog in Clonagonnell

Crannog

What is recorded here

Crannog in Clonagonnell is a small circular mound of earth and stones in County Cavan, Ireland, where burnt timbers still protrude from its sides. It sits in low-lying marshy land that was once Tonymore Lough, suggesting people lived above water before the basin changed. The mound may have been a home, a refuge or a marker, but its sharp edges and drowned setting keep it uncertain.
Small circular mound (dims. 17.2m NE-SW; max. H 0.37m) composed largely of earth and stones with burnt stone and timbers protruding from its sides. Situated in low-lying marshy land in what was once Tonymore Lough. (Wood-Martin 1886, 197-9; Davies 1942, 19) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
