What is recorded here
Ray's Fort stands in Castlenavan, County Down, a counterscarp rath marked on official maps since early Christian times. Its earthworks still hold the shape of hands that dug them, perhaps farmers, perhaps fighters, perhaps both. The name Ray survives where memory failed, a small anchor dropping through centuries of forgotten life.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as COUNTERSCARP RATH: RAY'S FORT. Recorded period: E.CHRIST.. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.
