The counterscarf platform is the annular ledge where those ribs meet the main shell, distributing load across a wider base instead of concentrating stress at a single joint. Rath in Ballymoneymore may describe a local landmark, a family name, or a place whose history has been lost. The engineering function is clear even when the story behind the name is not.
