Continental Foods Cash and Carry

Terraced two-bay three-storey house with dormer attic, built c.1840, now in commercial use. Pitched slate roof with shared brown brick chimneystacks, terracotta chimneypots to east chimneystack and square-headed dormer windows to front (south) elevation, behind brown brick parapet wall with masonry coping. Brown brick wall laid in Flemish bond to upper floors. Gauged brick square-headed window openings with masonry sills, painted render reveals and single-pane timber sliding sash windows. Recent shopfront to ground floor comprising timber engaged pilasters, on plinth bases, supporting timber consoles and fascia over square-headed glazed door and window openings. Square-headed door opening with timber panelled door to west of shopfront.

This modest yet well composed building retains some notable features, such as timber sash windows, which add architectural interest to the façade. The house presents a coherent form, its layout is similar to that of the others on the streetscape. It forms part of the terrace lining the north side of Talbot street, which was laid out in the 1840s following the sale of Tyrone House.
