Conor Cruise O'Brien and Patrick Kavanagh never met, though both men still populate the same Irish imagination. O'Brien wanted to administer an electric shock to the Irish psyche, while Kavanagh dropped his poems like coins into ordinary cups. One is a knife for politics, the other a spoon for memory. Together they show that Ireland keeps arguing with itself through men strong enough to be remembered.
