Confederate Hall marked the spot where Irish representatives assembled in 1642 to govern during wartime. The building is gone, but the chamber lived in law, argument and memory. Kilkenny still carries that sudden birth of a nation, not as myth but as a room where ordinary people stopped waiting to be told what to do.
