During the Second World War and afterwards 1939-1959 he and his wife made it a 'home from home' for over 70,000 service people from all over the world Recorded plaque organisation: Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo Parish Council.
John Iliffe Poole lived here from 1925 to 1959; he was recognized as the world's longest surviving laryngectomee and along with his wife provided hospitality to over 70,000 service members during and after World War II.
