This blue commemorative plaque records: LIEUTENANT PETER SCAWEN WATKINSON ROBERTS VC, DSC, Royal Navy. Was educated here. Awarded the VC with PO Gould for their action on 16th February 1942 when, with total disregard for their own safety, they successfully removed two unexploded bombs from beneath the casing of HM Submarine THRASHER whilst the submarine was on the surface, inside enemy waters and in broad daylight. Lieutenant Peter Scawen Watkinson Roberts VC, DSC, Royal Navy, was educated locally and is remembered for his bravery during World War II, notably for receiving the Victoria Cross for removing two unexploded bombs from HM Submarine THRASHER under extreme danger and enemy observation.
