Clochan in Com Dhíneol Theas

Púicín na bhFothrach: Originally a group of 7 clochauns, but 4 were removed to provide building material for a high enclosing wall to a field/garden, and the 3 remaining were incorporated into the latter (Macalister 1899, 275; Curran no. 6). The largest structure was apparently inhabited in about 1847. (1) In the N wall of the field. An oval structure of corbelled drystone construction, with a lintelled wall-cupboard in the interior. D: 3.1 x 1.5m. H: 1.5m. (2) In the NE corner of the field. Almost completely obscured by collapse and field clearance debris but described by Macalister as 5-sided on plan with a maximum internal dimension of 1.8m. (3) Survives as a buttress-like projection, 2.5m high, against the E wall of the field. No means of access to interior. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne.
