What is recorded here
KE043-166---- is situated in the pass between Knockmoylemore and Sugarloaf, about 100m W of a ford across the Garfinny river. It consists of a circular, stone-walled enclosure with a large clochaun centrally positioned in the interior.
The circular clochaun measures 5.2m in diameter internally and the slightly corbelled wall stands to a maximum height of 1.95m. The external face is stepped. The lower step consists of a grass-grown plinth of earth and stones measuring .75 to 1.2m in width and up to 1.15m in height. The clochaun wall rises a maximum of .8m above this and is 1 to 1.2m wide. There is a small niche at ground level in the inner wall-face at SW. It measures .25m high, .45m wide and .7m deep. The entrance to the clochaun faced SE but the wall in this sector has been broken away and the debris now forms a large platform of earth and stone in front of the entrance area.
The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 556. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
