His son lost the property during the famine, absentee owners let it decay, and a later butcher buyer triggered a violent local land dispute that ended only when tenants took shared control. Without one master to maintain it, people stripped the roof, windows and timber, leaving empty towers to face Clifden Bay. The castle still stands as a dangerous skeleton of ambition, hunger and resistance.
