Claypotts Castle is a rare surviving example of a 16th-century z-plan fortified house built between 1569 and 1588 for John Strachan after Lindores Abbey closed. The modest stone walls rise just north of the River Tay, marking the moment tenant farmers became landowners and began shaping their own destiny. Its long construction suggests limited wealth stretched across years rather than grand ambition, yet the result remains a distinctive footprint of Scottish domestic defence.
