Clasheen Bridge

Single-arch rubble limestone road bridge over river, c.1825. Random rubble limestone walls with cut-limestone coping to parapets. Single segmental arch with tooled limestone ashlar voussoirs, and dressed rubble limestone soffits having remains of render over. Sited spanning tributary of Kings River with grass banks to river.

Forming an element of the early nineteenth-century civil engineering heritage of County Kilkenny an elegantly-composed bridge makes a pleasing, if subtle visual statement on a crossing over a tributary of the Kings River. The construction in locally-sourced limestone produces a monochromatic palette while refined dressings including the voussoirs display high quality stone masonry.
