Cist in Slievenaglasha

Cist

What is recorded here

Slievenaglasha still holds a kerbed cairn where a central cist once stood, though by 1999 the chamber had vanished and only a robbed-out centre remained. Westropp wrote in 1913 that the cell was long since opened and still stood five feet inwards, large enough for a person to crawl into darkness. The stones may have swallowed a funeral, a hidden cache or a child’s reckless game, but the earth has kept that much from everyone.
Within a kerbed cairn (CL010-064065-). Westropp (1913, 247) noted a central cist ‘long since opened and partly filled; its cell is still opened for 5 feet [1.5m] inwards’. On inspection in 1999 the cist was not evident but the centre of the cairn had been partly robbed out. Compiled by: Mary Tunney Date of upload: 19 April 2023
Cist in Slievenaglasha is a Bronze Age burial cist, likely dating to the early to middle first millennium BCE. Its original presence within a kerbed cairn suggests a ritual or funerary function, though its current status is uncertain due to disturbance and lack of recent visibility.
