Church

What is recorded here

Cell na Clerech stood on a north-facing ridge above the Owenboy estuary by 1088, likely guiding pilgrims through salt air and darkness. A bungalow occupies the site today, yet dressed stones still glitter in the garden like forgotten bones. The church vanished from maps and memory, but its stones may still warm human hands, carrying old prayers into ordinary life.
On N-facing slope of E-W ridge, overlooking Owenboy estuary. Not shown on 1842 or 1902 maps. Site now occupied by modern bungalow; some dressed stone fragments in garden may be from church. Referred to as 'Cell na Clerech' in the Annals of Inishfallen (1088 AD) (pers. comm. D. O Murchadha); mentioned in Ecclesiastical Taxation lists for 1302. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
