Church (in ruins)

East-of-centre in graveyard (LI036-125002-). Roofless ruin of rectangular church (int.: 25.75m E-W; 7.9m N-S), built of roughly coursed stone. Side walls stand to full height but top of E gable fallen and W wall reduced to footings level. Entered through doorway near W end of S wall; door surround missing, though sill in position; doorway covered by segmental arch. Three windows survive: in centre of E wall; near E end of S wall; and E-of-centre in N wall; in 1840 there were two slit windows in W gable which then stood (OSL vol. 2, 10). East window has double, cusped ogee-headed light, with recessed spandrels and hood moulding, but mullion missing; embrasure widely splayed with round-arched head. South window has similar light but embrasure covered by segmental arch. North window has single ogee-headed light; splayed embrasure has lintelled head. Just E of window in S wall is aumbry/piscina- its base is now covered; surround in cut limestone with pointed arch and moulded stop chamfer. Break (Wth 2.7m) in N wall to W-of-centre. Interior covered with burial plots, some headstones recent but the earliest dated 1807. Remains of late-medieval parish church of Monagay (Westropp 1904-5, 403).
