Church

What is recorded here

Carrigan (1905, vol. 3, 421-2) gives the derivation of ‘Kilmanahan’ as, ‘the Church of St. Mainchin (pronounced Monniaheen)’. He goes on to say that while there is no tradition of a church in this townland, but that ‘Most probably it stood on Edward Dowling’s “Thullach,” a green hill crowned by the ruins of an ancient cyclopean building, standing east and west, 39 ft. [c. 12m] long by 24 ft. [7.3m] wide, the walls being now only about 2 ft. [c. 0.6m] high’. The precise location of this building within the townland is unknown. The church in Kilmanaheen is dedicated to St. Mainchin and likely dates to the early medieval period. Its name and dedication suggest a connection to the spread of Christianity in Ireland, though specific builders or construction dates are not recorded.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
