Church in Kilcommon More (north)

The exact location of Kilcommon church or 'Cummian's Church' is unknown. According to Power (1908, 25) 'the site of the early church is within the Glengall demesne and quite close to the Swiss cottage. On the erection of the latter and the laying out of the ornamental grounds which surround it the ancient graveyard was disturbed and the bones of the dead, in many cases, removed'. The Bendictine priory of St. Philip, James and Armin (Cumin) was founded by Philip of Worcester as a dependency of Glastonbury and while there is some dispute over the location, it is believed that Kilcommon near Cahir is the site as this was part of the founder's lands (Gwynn and Hadcock 1988, 107). The foundation date is given as c. 1200, with evidence that it continued up to the reign of Edward III [1327-77] (ibid.).
