Church in Cork City

St. Catherine's parish church was first mentioned in a charter of Gerald de Pendergast dated 1223-30. It passed from the possessions of St. Thomas' abbey, Dublin to the Cistercian Abbey of Chore (Midleton) at some point prior to 1540. The parish of St. Catherine had been annexed to St. Mary's Shandon in 1617 which may indicate that the church was then in ruins. A number of references make it clear that the church was located in the Shandon area, immediately N of the city; however other references indicate that it was situated W of North Gate Bridge, 'in or near North Abbey Square' (Bradley et al. 1985, 67-8).
