What is recorded here
Freestanding gable-fronted Roman Catholic church, built c. 1940, having five-bay nave elevations, round-roofed porch to front, lower sacristy to west and bell tower to north-west. Pitched tiled roof, with cast-iron cross finial over gable-front, and with rendered chimneystack to sacristy. Painted roughcast rendered walls, with brick and rendered walls to porch with cross motifs. Square-headed window openings to sacristy, and round-headed elsewhere, double-light to end bays of nave elevations and triple-light above porch, all with render surrounds, stained-glass windows and render sills. Round-headed entrance doorway having chamfered limestone surround, stained-glass overlight and timber battened double-leaf doors. Roughcast rendered square-profile piers with double-leaf cast-iron gates with pedestrian entrance set to rendered boundary walls.
This church is a notable example of mid-twentieth-century ecclesiastical architecture. The influence of the Arts and Crafts movement is apparent in the steeply pitched, tiled roof. The materials, such as concrete render and brick, are typical of this era. Cut limestone is reserved for the entrance surround and this combination of materials provides interesting textural and chromatic variation. The close proximity of the church to the local national school shows how rural education has traditionally been organized on a parish basis. Prominently sited, this church forms a local landmark in the area.
